In February, Activision-Blizzard announced the layoff of 8% of its workforce, or about 775 positions, despite a record quarter. Resident Evil 2 deserves every bit of praise heaped on it by fans and critics alike, and if you didn’t find time to play it-if it’s sitting there in your backlog as we speak-make time. What a tremendous game, taking a classic and making it even better for modern day consoles.įrightening, challenging, at times pretty silly, filled with ridiculous puzzles and tense encounters with zombies, this was the first sign that Capcom was on the rise in 2019 following a resurgent 2018 and the release of Monster Hunter World. (Which isn’t to say Activision was at fault for all of the issues Destiny and Destiny 2 faced, but rather that at least Bungie could shape its, er, destiny however they wanted going forward).īy far the best game released in January was Resident Evil 2 Remake. It was big news, and probably the best possible news for the game and the future of the franchise. The studio was taking on Destiny 2’s future as an independent studio at long last. That seems an obvious observation as there’s evolution in any medium, but video games by their infinite malleability allow for innovation and creativity beyond any other. My biggest takeaway is that the past 10 years of games have broadened the scope of what constitutes a “video game” more than any other decade. Societal/cultural impact takes precedence here, as I argued back in 2016. Likewise, I’m happy to see an overwhelming industry/fan/consumer favorite sit extremely high in the list at number 2, but not receive top honors. (While Red Dead Redemptions 1 and 2 are counted as a single entry, I only ever played the first, so it counts as half.)Īs I have a soft spot for Nintendo games, I’m happy with Polygon’s Mario pick over what I assumed would be the shoo-in. Honestly, that’s more than I thought I would have. I played 23.5 of the 100 titles mentioned in this list.
It is, by its nature, a compromise, but it’s the best we’ve got.Ī fun look back at a decade that now seems shorter than it felt - I’ll blame that on the past three years.
